BACKGROUND
Scope: Two scissor-style stair and elevator cores with a total of 112 18-riser stairs in a luxury Miami Beach condo development
Customer: Baker Concrete, Florida

PROBLEM SOLVED:
Castcon was approached by Baker Concrete to provide precast stairs in lieu of Cast in Place to address ongoing issues with field-formed and cast stairs. Due to being out of tolerance and non code-compliant, they were becoming major punch list items. Castcon worked out connection details that were agreeable to all parties and that met all applicable codes.
Each stair was cast with splice length reinforcing protruding from each end so the stairs could be set directly into the formwork and the floor landings could be cast around them.
The system worked very well, as the stairs went up with the formwork and the active construction levels. The customer was extremely delighted to find that, for once, the stairs were not on his punch list for remedial work. He had a code-compliant finished product from the day the stairs were set in place.
