Castcon Stone, Inc. Wins Contract To Supply Precast Concrete Stairs To World Trade Center Port Authority Transit Hub
Date: August 5, 2009
Saxonburg, PA. Castcon Stone, Inc., one of the leading manufacturers of precast concrete stair systems and structural precast products in the United States, has been awarded a $500,000 contract to produce precast concrete stairs and landings for use in the new Port Authority Transit Hub (PATH) Station located beneath the site of the World Trade Center. Owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, this below-grade construction project rebuilds one of New York City's busiest subway stations that was severely damaged in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Under terms of the contract issued in June by Jersey Precast, Castcon will supply 105 flights of concrete stairs and 36 landings. All precast stair units will be outfitted with photo-luminescent metal nosings. Production will begin October 1, 2009, and delivery of precast stair and landing components will begin in 2010. The final delivery for the project will be made in 2013.
"We are extremely pleased to be selected for this important assignment," commented Laura Huch-Kerckhoff, President and CEO of Castcon Stone, Inc. "We have a strong relationship with our customer, Jersey Precast, as well as with DCM Erectors, the general contractor on the job. In addition, since 2005 we have worked closely with Downtown Design Partnership to develop working drawings for the project. They chose precast for the project due to the fluid design possibilities, fire and blast resistance, and the ability to closely control the quality in the plant. We are looking forward to meeting and exceeding the expectations of the Port Authority, Santiago Calatrava - the design architect on the project - as well as STV, the project engineer."
The current plan for the World Trade Center site includes four new skyscrapers, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center, a retail complex, a performing arts center and the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The project's proposed centerpiece, Freedom Tower, is designed to soar 1,176 feet into the sky and will contain 2.6 million square feet of space.
